ARTIST at School Education Gateway

The European Commission congratulated on ARTIST, which was selected as an example of good practice in this month’s editorial of the School Education Gateway . Ingo Eilks and Nadja Frerichs conduct a workshop on action research and the ARTIST project with about 20 teacher educators from the University of Latvia, Riga, LV.

August 26-30, 2019

Inspired by ARTIST, members of the consortium made a symposium on action research at the European Science Education Research Association (ESERA) conference in Bologna, Italy. Contributions were provided by Ingo Eilks, Marika Kapanadze, M. Fatih Tasar, and Franz Rauch. Thanks to Silvija Markic to be our discussant. Nadja Frerichs presented the project with a poster under the European STEM education projects.

July 30 - August 01, 2019

From July 30t till August 1st, the final conference of the Artist project took place in Batumi, Georgia. All project partners, guests and numerous teachers from Georgia attended the conference. The teachers as well as the project partners presented their Action Research case studies that have been conducted during the course of the project. An additional focus was on the implementation of many workshops, for instance on Action Research strategies, networking or innovative teaching approaches. We thank our hosts from Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University for the hospitality and the flawless organization as well as all the consortium members for a successful implementation of the project.

ARTIST accepted at EARLI 2019

The presentation entitled "Participatory action research as a way to innovate mathematics and science teaching", a study performed in the framework of the ARTIST project by Shirley Miedjinsky a member of the OACE staff, was accepted at EARLI 2019 Conference that will be held in RWTH Aachen University (Germany) coming 12-16 of August.

The European Science Education Research Association (ESERA) accepted a symposium on Action Research inspired by the ARTIST project for the coming ESERA conference, August 2019, in Bologna, Italy. The symposium will consist of papers from the ARTIST partners in Bremen, Tbilisi, Klagenfurt and Ankara.

ARTIST presentation at the 20th Conference "Research, Essay and Creation" at Oranim Academic College of Education

 

The members of the ARTIST project presented ARTIST at the 20th Conference "Research, Essay and Creation" at the Oranim Academic College of Education.

The ARTIST session was dedicated to students' conceptions about Action Research; it comprised the following presentations:

  • Professor Ricardo Trumper presented the vision, goals and activities of ARTIST, indicating the progress that was done since the beginning of the project.
  • Dr. Amos Cohn presented the innovations in physics education that are being developed at the Acheret Center in the Western Galilee, one of the partners of Oranim network.
  • Dr. Rachel Cohen, Dr. Iris Vagner-Gershgoren and Dr. Osnat Eldar presented students' conceptions about Action Research in their Action Research M. Ed. courses.

 

The final step of the session was a discussion about the relation between students' conceptions about Action Research and innovations in science education, with the active participation of the people attending the session.

Ingo Eilks, Franz Rauch and Ivano Laudonia (a teacher from the wider ARTIST network Bremen) presented the ARTIST project and teacher education materials at the CARN-D.A.CH. conference in Innsbruck (Austria). CARN-D.A.CH. is the international collaborative action research network for the German speaking countries.

Higher Education Reform Experts (HERE) Conference was held on 12-13 of December, 2018 in Rome, Italy (https://supporthere.org/event/here-annual-conference-uniroma-rome). Prof. Dr. Marika Kapanadze from Ilia State University presented ARTIST project and shared its results with the conference participants from different countries.

International Symposium: Reforms in Science Teaching and Learning towards the 21st Century

 

At the International Symposium: Reforms in Science Teaching and Learning towards the 21s tCentury at The Academic Arab College of Education in Israel, which took place in Haifa from December 11 to 13, 2018, Franz Rauch, Alpen-Adria University, Klagenfurt (Austria) gave a talk on the topic “Regional Networks and Regional Didactic Centers to foster Science Education”.The key idea for conducting the symposium was to bring together science educators from different countries and from different educational systems to lecture and discuss ideas and models for reforming the way science is currently taught and learned (www.arabcol-rstl2018.org/).

National Conference ‘’ Learning and Teaching for Life Long Learning’’ organized by the Ministry of Education and Sciences of Georgia was held on 1st of December, 2018 in Tbilisi, Georgia.  ARTIST project teacher Dr. Natia Bagatrishvili from State School N7, Telavi presented the project.

Third international ARTIST workshop held in Haifa

 

The ARTIST project held its third and last international workshop in Haifa, Israel. ARTIST members from the Germany, Austria, Ireland, Georgia and Turkey offered workshops to about 20 science educators. Again a day open for teachers gathered about 50 participants for the dissemination of ARTIST. We thank our hosts from AACE and OACE for the great hospitality in Israel.

ARTIST presentation at the IMST (Innovations Make Schools Top) - conference 2018

 

At the IMST-conference, on 25 September 2018 at Klagenfurt, Austria a general introduction to the project ARTIST was provided and the ARTIST-flyer distributed. 255 teachers and teacher educators attended the IMST-conference, which was dedicated to the topic "Creativity in the educational environment". What does creativity mean in context of education, what role does creativity play in teacher education, how much creativity does the school need, was discussed during the conference. IMST is a large project and network in Austria with the goal to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the sciences, in mathematics and technology as well as German language. The IMST conference offers the opportunity to exchange ideas and to discuss topics in an interdisciplinary manner. For more information, see this link.

ARISE journal website open at www.arisejournal.com

 

The website of the ARISE journal is online and the editorial system is open to receive submissions.

ARISE - Action Research and Innovation in Science Education is a peer-reviewed international journal. ARISE publishes academic and practitioner research in the field of science education. Papers shall be about action research and related approaches like practitioner research, design research and innovation studies. Papers may comprise theoretical discussions, research studies, or reports on evidence based curriculum innovation. Contributions may focus all the science teaching domains, from early childhood science through the secondary and university level to informal science and environmental education. Manuscripts on science teacher education in connection to action research, classroom-based research and innovation or research-based learning in teacher education are welcome as well as papers on the methodology of action research for classroom innovation in science education. The journal language is English. ARISE will publish three types of papers: - Review and perspectives papers that provide general overviews on any theoretical topic relevant to action research and related approaches with relevance to science education (max. 10.000 words including references) - Research papers that report action research and related studies form the field of science education (max. 5.000 words including references) - Short communications raising relevant questions or reporting preliminary works from the field of action research and related approaches in science education (max. 2.000 words including references) ARISE is an open access electronic journal and does not charge an article publication fee of any sort (i.e. there are neither manuscript processing charges for authors, nor subscription fees for readers). The launch of the ARISE journal is part of the ERASMUS+ CBHE project Action Research to Innovate Science Teaching (ARTIST) and is co-funded by the ERASMUS+ Programme of the European Union. Founding editors of the journal are Prof. Ingo Eilks and Prof. Marika Kapanadze. An international editorial board is established from among members of the ARTIST Project Consortium and invited scholars in the field of science education with experience in research methods and action research. Accepted papers will be immediately published after acceptance. The first volume of ARISE will be launched in 2018.

Staff members of the OACE and the AACE presented ARTIST in a special session carried out at the International Conference "Creativity in Teaching" that was held at the Oranim College of Education on July 3, 2018. The session included the following activities:

 

  • Participants were asked to write what AR means for them and a short discussion was lead by Dr. Iris Wagner-Gershgoren.
  • Prof. Ricardo Trumper presented the vision, goals and activities of ARTIST.
  • Staff members of the OACE (Dr. Iris Wagner- Gershgoren, Dr. Osnat Eldar, Dr. Shirley Miedjinsky and Dr. Rachel Cohen) and for the AACE (Dr. Jubran Fadil, Dr. Naim Najmi and Dr. Ahmad Basheer) presented the action researches in which they are involved.
  • Participants discussed the relation between AR and creativity in teaching, lead by Dr. Shirley Miedjinsky.

 

Finally, participants were invited to the workshop that will take place coming October.

June 25-28, 2018

Second international ARTIST workshop held in Georgia

 

Just a few weeks after Manila, the ARTIST project held its second international workshop. ARTIST members from the program countries Germany, Austria, Ireland, and Turkey went to Tbilisi, Georgia. The workshop was held by some 30 science teacher educators, a conference day - open also to teachers - motivated about 60 teacher educators and teachers from ARTIST and all regions of Georgia to present and discuss their action research works and potential future projects. The feedback was very positive and the ARTIST team and its guests enjoyed the proverbial hospitality of Georgia.

June 10, 2018

Prof. Ricardo Trumper and Dr. Osnat Eldar, from the Oranim Academic College of Education (OACE), presented ARTIST to researchers from different Education Colleges participating in the "Group of interest – Self-research and action research", at the Mofet Institute in Israel, in order to explain the ARTIST goals and to try and engage them to their network. The MOFET Institute is a national intercollegiate center for the research and development of curricula and programs in teacher education and teaching in the colleges. It constitutes a unique framework both in Israel and worldwide for supporting teacher educators’ professional development. Besides that, Mr. Chen Ferdovich, a biology teacher from the "New Junior High-school" in Iokneam, one of the Oranim network partners, presented his plans for action research related to the teaching of biodiversity conservation in his science classroom. The researchers were also invited to participate in the ARTIST activities in Israel and to send manuscripts of their research to our journal ARISE.

May 15-18, 2018

First international ARTIST workshop held in the Philippines

 

The ARTIST project held its first international workshop. Under participation of ARTIST members from Germany, Austria, Georgia, Ireland, Turkey and the Philippines the workshop was held at Del La Salle University in Manila, The Philippines. About 40 persons attended a three days intense action research workshop that was followed by a conference day with more than 160 teachers and teacher educators from all over the Philippines. The feedback was great and the local organizers provided the ARTIST team and all our guests a great experience.

Ricardo Trumper, Ahmad Basheer and the ARTIST teams from the Israeli partners (AACE & OACE) reported the progress and the implementation of the ARTIST project to the monitoring committee from the ERASMUS+ office in Israel at a meeting at the Oranim Academic College of Education.

September 14-15, 2017

The ARTIST consortium meets in Vienna, Austria, for the 2nd consortium meeting. Participants discuss the course of the project and plan, among others, the workshops in the Philippines, Georgia and Israel during the year 2018.

On the 1st  meeting of the Action Research course at the Academic Arab College (Haifa) for Education the ARTIST project and principles of action research were introduced to teachers from our school partners.

August 21-25, 2017

The ARTIST project was presented at the ESERA conference in Dublin, Ireland. Most partners had representatives at the ESERA conference and made use of it for informal meetings on ARTIST.
